Vacation, Day Five

Friday after Holy Trinity
Vacation, Day Five
June 4, 2010

The Lord be with you

I am looking forward to going to bed in the same bed I woke up in.

Today was filled mainly with wedding preparations for Jake and Jeana. Kitty and I also took a walk.

Today Max Miller, our nephew, the son of Johnny, arrived in town. It was fun to visit and catch up some.

Barb is one of the guests here. She (and her family) is from Arizona. With no one saying anything, she volunteered a defense of Arizona’s recent legislation concerning immigration. As I listened to her, and considered what we are hearing from political correctness advocates both in politics and in the media, the whole situation reminded me of bussing for integration. When the courts only thought the South needed integration, the country thought everyone in the South that opposed bussing were nothing but backward bigots. When the courts decided the rest of the country should integrate, all of a sudden bussing was bad in everyone’s eyes. Unless you face the challenges of a certain region, it is hard to judge fairly.

Now I’m not saying I agree with the position of Arizona, nor am I saying I disagree. What I am saying is that, until we “walk a mile in their shoes,” we can’t understand the emotion of this issue from the point-of-view of the people in Arizona. It is always easy to point the finger at someone else. When Jesus judged, it was always with compassion. When the Pharisees judged, it was with arrogance and smugness. How are we judging?

The following picture is of Max Miller, my daughter Rachel, and her two children Dixie and Gregory.

Blessings in Christ,
Pastor John Rickert

  1. We really missed Phillip today. The rehearsal dinner was held at a restaurant that had a huge coy pond; he would have loved it! John was officially in charge of grilling all of the chicken for lunch for the whole crew who were decorating the backyard for the wedding - no small task!
