Dear Mission Prayer Partners,
Thank
you for praying for those who participated in the prayer walk on August
9. And for each of you who joined in the prayer walking of your
neighborhoods - thank you.
From SED President Emeritus Art Scherer
Sunday
For The City was a first step in reaching out to the Sandtown
community, not far from the heart of the recent Baltimore disturbances.
While those with younger legs went prayer walking and listening to folks
in the neighborhood, I stayed at our home base to greet those who came
by for food, entertainment, and conversation. ---- One of many
learnings: When I would ask children 10 - 12 years old if they would
like something to eat, they didn't ask for cookies or snack foods. Most
asked for FRUIT and truly enjoyed the grapes, oranges, apples that we
had. The inner city is often a food desert. Cookies and snacks are at
every corner store, but fruit may be miles away.
Continue
to pray with me for the renewal of our cities and the growing presence
of God's kingdom throughout the Southeastern District.
One
way that God is calling us to action is through the opportunities to
partner in the Ethiopian communities of our Southeastern District. In
the past months, Virginia Evangelical Mekane Yesus Congregation of
Annandale VA was chartered and Grace Ethiopian, Springfield VA is
close
to chartering. (A chartered congregation is recognized by the LCMS as a
member of the Synod and listed on the roster of the Synod as a
congregation.)
In addition, the following ministries are registered as new church starts:
*Ethiopian Evangelical Mission Mekane Yesus LCMS, Cary, NC
*Oromo Evangelical Luth. Mission of North Carolina, Cary, NC
*Shalom Ethiopian Evangelical Luth. Mission, Alexandria, VA
New
work in Baltimore, Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia
continues to emerge as ministry resources and support are gathered for
new communities.
God
has also guided Rev. Dr. Yared Halche to partner with us as a member of
the District staff to help congregations who desire to open their
hearts and space to welcome an immigrant community.
As you pray for mission work these days, pray for:
- Rev. Halche as his work grows throughout the District
- New opportunities to reach new people with the Gospel
- The new Ethiopian church starts in Cary, Alexandria, Baltimore, Washington
- And the renewal of our cities, communities, and neighborhoods.
Thank you for your mission prayer support. They are making an eternal difference.
