Monday after the First Sunday of Advent
December 1, 2014
The Lord be with you
This coming Wednesday we will gather for our first mid-week
Advent service. We will be using Evening Prayer (page 243) for our liturgy. There
will be three services (December 3, 10 & 17). Each service will be preceded
by a soup supper that begins at 6:15 pm.
Following the services the choir will rehearse.
The theme of the homily series is “The Meaning of Christmas
is …” The homily schedule is:
December 3: The Meaning of Christmas is Love
December 10: The Meaning of Christmas is Family
December 17: The Meaning of Christmas is Giving
The Christmas story, as we have come to know and love it, is
drawn from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. As part of this year’s scripture
lessons, we will hear those texts. The lessons for this Wednesday, then, are
Luke 2:1-21 (Christmas story), John 3:16-21 and Psalm 141:1-4, 8. The opening
hymn will be “Of the Father’s Love Begotten (LSB 352). The homily hymn
is actually from Lutheran Worship. It is one of the hymns that didn’t
make it to Lutheran Service Book. It is “Love Came Down at Christmas” (LW
46). The words are printed in the worship bulletin. The closing hymn will be “God
Loves Me Dearly” (LSB 392).
Below is a video of a children’s choir singing “Love Came
Down at Christmas.”
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Rickert
